The Mustangs were held to only 74 yards and just under 19 minutes of ball possession in the opening non-conference loss to Dixie State College Saturday evening, 35-3. The Mustangs are now 0-1 overall. They will open up conference play next Saturday at the Colorado School of Mines. Kick-off is set for 12:00 noon.

The Mustangs and Rebels were tied after one quarter with a field goal from each side. For the Mustangs, Steve Flores (Peoria, AZ/Peoria High School) (Peoria, AZ) posted a 42-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining. This would be the only score the Mustangs would have in the game.

Dixie State pulled away with the game after their defense proved too much for the young Mustang offense headed by quarterback Chris Voller (Albuquerque, NM/Valley High School) (Albuquerque, NM). Dixie State scored on a variety of ways, including a safety and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Their defense also added six sacks, an interception, and four forced fumbles. WNMU's Voller finished with 125 yards on 16 completions in his debut.

Running back Dakota Woodard (Silver City, NM/Silver High School) (Silver City, NM) carried the ball ten times, good for 39 yards. His longest run, 22 yards, came in the fourth quarter. From the receivers, Carlos Miranda (Peoria, AZ/Peoria High School) (Peoria, AZ) led the way for the Mustangs with 61 yards on seven receptions.

On the defensive end, Robert Rodriguez (El Paso, TX) led both teams with 11 solo tackles and 4 assists. He also recorded one tackle for a loss of six yards. Maurice Wells (Tucson, AZ/Cienega High school) (Tucson, AZ) posted 21 yards for a loss, the highest for the Mustangs.
